NEKOMATA Resin Sculpture

from 65.00

Hand-painted resin sculpture of a Nekomata, a demon like cat found in Japanese folklore.

nekomata 猫また
In Japanese folklore it is believed that when cats come of a certain age their tails will fork and they will acquire magic. They will turn into nekomata, youkai that cause trouble much alike a poltergeist. They were associated with strange fires and even necromancy. (as cats in Japan are linked to death.) In some tales these cats can shape-shift into women or to a monstrous size. In the Edo period these superstitions caused many people to clip the tails of kittens so they may never form another one or to not keep cats around too long altogether.
